Do MBBS students enjoy college life?
Yes, MBBS students do enjoy college life. We find happiness both in academic life as well as in life outside studies :
I'm a 2nd year student in College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital, Kolkata.
So let me start with the first day,
-
The Admission Day : It's unforgettable as your hard work for the last few years finally pays off and you get admmited to your college to pursue your dreams.
-
First Day of college - Orientation Day : The moment was precious, when we all entered the auditorium for the first time with full enthusiasm. Principal ma'am , MSVP Sir and other HODS and Professors gave speech about college and the things we'll be facing in next few years. We had to introduce ourself in front of them. Then we had a tour to the departments in college.
-
White coat ceremony : This was another special moment as our principal ma'am handed over our white coats which we all wore and took the oath. Read More
How much does it usually cost to buy your textbooks in med school?
I think expenses on books is a rather under rated and under discussed issue with medical students.
Books are costly and there is no way around it. However we can do a few things to better utilise our meagre resources during med school days.
-
Before rushing off to buy a book, make an attempt to flip it through once at the local college library to get a feel of what its like.
-
Just because everyone is using a book doesn't mean it is right or useful for you. You may end up buying a costly book and sticking with it because you do not dare think of spending more on a different one.
Medical students, what advice would you like to give your juniors who will be joining the college next month?
-
You were a topper of your school, same with everybody else. Don't fret over rank 1 from now on or you are up for an ugly surprise.
-
In the initial few days, you would be carrying the recesses of your schooltime ambitions. You want to study and become a neurosurgeon/cardiosurgeon, fine! but keep everything balanced. Continuous sleepless nights and textbooks in front of eyes without an idea of how the world works, would make you a stupid doctor. Travel! Travel as much as you can. Read More

How do MBBS students prepare for their professionals?
MBBS is not a 100m sprint, it is a marathon. Hence, consistency is the key.
Since my 2nd Professional Exams are due the end of this month there could not have been a better time to answer this question.
Preparation strategies vary from individual to individual. Also, every subject requires separate handling. There cannot be one generalised scheme.
Here, I am sharing some of my preparation strategies :
-
Start the preparation well in advance. How advance ? It totally depends on you. For me, it started with the first lecture of the year. Read More
What is it that MBBS students know which regular people don't?
The fact that we are totally incapable of prescribing medications to patients during most of our MBBS duration. And that applies even to our toppers.
Third semester students like us are supposed to gather around Seiner Resident and see how he examines his patients, asks them to get certain tests done and finally comes to a diagnosis.
But what happens if, by chance, he has to go out of the room for a few minutes for some work? Read More
